DIE FLEDERMAUS

DIE FLEDERMAUS was a co-production with Harvard College Opera. The comic opera was performed in German with English supertitles. Act I, typically set in a lavish Austrian villa, was transposed to a mundane contemporary office space. As the characters prepare for the evening's masked ball (office holiday party), this seemingly-traditional modernization of a period farce is turned on its head. In Act II, the office space splits open, revealing a back wall of gold leaf, a ball-pit, and kitschy-costume-clad  partygoers. As the plot unravels, this space too is torn apart. In the final moments of the party, the chorus tears down the gold-leaf, demolishing the stage space to create the jail cell setting in Act III.
