ANTIGONE

ANTIGONE was a large-scale site-specific production that brought together over 6,000 spectators in the historic Harvard Football Stadium. With a new, and recently published, translation by students from the Harvard Classics Department, ANTIGONE featured an innovative scenic design of enormous inflatable canvas sculptures created by renowned visual artist Claire Ashley of the Art Institute of Chicago. This new musical adaptation includes an original choral and orchestral score as well as selections from the Harvard Disco Band and Harvard Latin Band.

Modeled after the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Harvard Stadium was the first football stadium built in the United States. In the early 20th Century it was home to annual productions of classical texts that attracted thousands of spectators from across New England, a tradition that had been largely forgotten until this year. ANTIGONE was not only a theater production, but a civic gathering and mixed-media public art event.
